Hot Cars, Cool Tips: Beat the Heat This Summer

8 Towing safety tips for caravans and trailers

With summer in full swing, heatwaves can be dangerous and sometimes even deadly. That is why it is critical to understand how to stay safe during a heatwave and how to protect yourself and your loved ones from the scorching heat.

We’ve put together a few tips that you can use during a heatwave, particularly when it comes to the use of your car:

  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a short period of time. Even when you’re on the move, you should take additional care to make sure the very young, very old, and animals are comfortable and hydrated.

  • Maintain your car properly. A well-maintained car is less likely to overheat or break down on a hot day. Check fluid levels, paying particular attention to your car’s coolant level; this is what will stop your engine from overheating.

  • Keep your car cool by using windshield shades or tinting film on your windows, as well as parking in a shaded or undercover area. When your car has been standing in the sun for a long period of time, and you need to cool it down quickly, fan the doors by opening the front windows and "fanning" the interior hot air out by swinging the door. This fanning motion will cool down the inside of the car. Be aware of your surroundings and cars parked close by, so that you do not hit the car parked next to you.

  • Hot air leads to an increase in air pressure, which contributes to a greater risk of tyre punctures. If you over-inflate your car’s tyres on a regular basis, they will suffer more wear and tear, potentially resulting in a burst tyre. Check your tyre pressure when your tyres are cold and be aware of any tread wear or other problems that could lead to a puncture. You do not want to be out in the hot sun, while changing a tyre.

By following these tips, you can stay safe and cool during a heatwave and protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of extreme heat. Remember, it only takes a few minutes for your car to become dangerously hot.

Driving in a heatwave can be unpleasant, however, with a little diligence, general upkeep, and the right accessories, your car will stay running smoothly all summer long, keeping passengers safe, cool, and happy.
